Started in 2005, ZSS Drums Ensemble was previously known as the Malay Drums as it aimed at introducing the students to traditional Malay drums such as the Sunda drums, Kompang, Marwas, Jidur, Rebana and Darbuka. However, later on, it also introduces students to other percussion instruments, basically from Africa. It began with less than 10 students; ZSS Drums Ensemble now has about 20 enthusiastic and dedicated students.

With the help of our drums instructor, Mr Yaziz Hassan, they not only learn about music but also teamwork, interaction, respect one another and importantly, discipline. This is further enhanced by the Annual Drums Camp that started since 2006. Mr Yaziz Hassan’s experience in the percussion scene aids ZSS Drums Ensemble in gaining recognition by the school as well as the public. His flair in playing various percussion instruments, be it modern or traditional, is valuable to the team. His involvement in performing in various national and international events as well as teaching other schools contributes to ZSS Drums Ensemble success.

Even though ZSS Drums Ensemble is only about 3 years old, it has involved in many internal and external performances. These are such as the school's concerts like Awards Day, National Day, Chinese New Year and Teachers’ Day. ZSS Drums Ensemble also performed for Community Drumming Festival 2005, Chingay 2005, MOE Excel Fest 2006, Montage 2006, Seniors Nite organised by Home Nursing Foundation and Malam Budaya organised by Zhenghua CC.

In 2007, ZSS Drums Ensemble was even invited by Nanyang Girls High School for their event called Malay Extravaganza where the boys introduced Malay percussion instruments as well as taught the girls the Malay custom of eating with their right hands. NYGHS invited Drums Ensemble again in 2008 for the same event.

2007 was a good year for Drums Ensemble as they got to perform in many external events apart from the above mentioned. These are such as for Singapore Arts Festival, Nan Hua High International Summer Camp, Racial Harmony Day Concert at Chinese High, Official Opening of Swami Home Elderlink, Pentas Budaya by PBMUKS, National Day Celebration by Taman Jurong CC, Pesta Raya and Ship for SEAYP Dinner organized by NYC.

In 2008, Drums Ensemble entered its first competition organized by NTU, that was, Drumzout 2008 and won the second prize. Apart from that, we performed for Chinese High School’s Racial Harmony Day Concert, Zhenghua CC National Concert and Ar-Raudhah Graduation Ceremony. With these exposure and guidance from Mr. Yaziz Hassan, ZSS Drums Ensemble hope to receive more opportunities to spread the love for music.
